Taunton Cycle Hub
In a bid to promote sustainable transport, Somerset West and Taunton Council collaborated with BSFG to develop a modern and eco-friendly cycle hub in the heart of Taunton.
Project Details
The facility aims to provide secure, accessible, and environmentally conscious parking for cyclists, encouraging more residents and visitors to adopt cycling as a viable mode of transport.
The Solution
BSFG worked closely with the council to deliver a cycle hub that would meet the needs of residents and local cyclists. The design features a timber-clad, open-fronted structure, creating a sheltered, accessible parking space that blends with the surrounding environment. The open design provides ease of access while maintaining visibility for safety.
The hub accommodates up to 14 standard bikes and 2 non-standard cargo bikes, catering to a diverse range of cyclists. This flexibility in design ensures that both regular and larger bikes are supported, which helps expand the accessibility of the facility.
The hub is topped with a green roof, adding environmental benefits by contributing to improved air quality, enhancing biodiversity, and reducing stormwater runoff – the design also features discreet integrated drainage pipes that run to the rear of the hub through the legs of the structure.
The hub is also equipped with solar-powered LED lighting, enabling cyclists to access the hub safely during both day and night. The integration of renewable energy further underscores the project’s sustainability goals.
Cyclists can make quick repairs or inflate their tires using the on-site repair stand and pump, adding to the hub’s utility.
