Hirael Flood Prevention Scheme
Bailey Street Furniture Group supplied durable seating, bespoke planters, and unique cycle parking for the Hirael Flood Prevention Scheme in Bangor, North Wales.
Project Details
Bailey Street Furniture Group (BSFG) played a key role in the Hirael Flood Prevention Scheme, supplying street furniture and cycle parking for the newly enhanced public footpath and cycle route that runs alongside a newly installed flood defence system.
Managed by Cyngor Gwynedd’s YGC Department and delivered by Griffiths Construction, the project involved significant infrastructure upgrades, including new flood gates, raised promenade walls, a new slipway, and active travel routes connecting Eryri to Bangor Pier.
Funded through the Welsh Government’s Coastal Risk Management Programme, the scheme provides protection against coastal flooding for nearly 200 properties in Bangor while promoting sustainable travel and community well-being.
Products Featured:
Seating - Anastasio Bench: Durable marblestone/granite seating, previously proven effective in coastal environments like Colwyn Bay.
Makatite Bench: Similarly robust and aesthetic, designed to endure challenging conditions while maintaining visual appeal.
Planters - Bespoke planters in grey polished marblestone/granite were chosen to complement the seating, providing a natural burst of colour and enhancing biodiversity in the space.
Cycle Parking - Smeraldo Cycle Rack: A unique design featuring a spiral steel tube fixed to reconstituted marblestone/granite supports, combining durability and style.
Community Impact:
The project not only addresses the increasing risk of flooding exacerbated by climate change but also benefits the community through the creation of an active travel route that integrates the cycle route with the coastal path.
Key Event:
The official opening was attended by dignitaries including the Mayor of Bangor, Welsh Government officials, and Cyngor Gwynedd representatives, highlighting the significance of this project for local residents and businesses.
Bailey Street Furniture Group is proud to have contributed to this transformative scheme, enhancing the functionality and aesthetics of a vital public space while supporting resilience against climate challenges.
