Project Details

BSFG played a key role in supporting the delivery of a major new public realm project in the heart of Gorton, Manchester. Commissioned by Manchester City Council and delivered by Warden Construction, the scheme involved the transformation of an underutilised car park into a vibrant and multifunctional public square. Situated between Gorton Market and Tesco, the new space is designed to improve town centre connectivity, attract increased footfall, and provide a welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.

Project Background

The Gorton Market Public Realm project aimed to revitalise a key location in Gorton through high-quality landscape design and thoughtful community-focused features. The square’s layout and features were developed in close consultation with local residents and community groups, ensuring that the resulting space reflects the needs and aspirations of the people who use it.

Covering around 1,900 square metres, the project included resurfaced footpaths, a new access road, upgraded lighting and signage, and a carefully selected palette of street furniture and planting to enhance the area's character and usability.

BSFG's Contribution

BSFG played a pivotal role in bringing the public realm vision to life by supplying and installing a suite of bespoke street furniture elements tailored to the space’s vibrant and inclusive design. Key contributions included:

  • Accessible Picnic Tables: Thoughtfully designed to ensure comfort and usability for all, promoting inclusivity within the space.

  • Circular Planters: A variety of sizes, including statement pieces up to 2 metres in diameter, planted with a diverse selection of perennials and small trees to ensure year-round interest and colour.

  • The “Gorton Tank”: A standout bespoke feature combining seating and integrated planting, designed in the shape of a train carriage. This unique element pays tribute to Gorton's industrial heritage and the nearby historic Gorton Locomotive Works.

Each element was crafted to enhance both the functionality and identity of the space, creating inviting areas for relaxation, socialising, and interaction.

Outcome

BSFG’s bespoke street furniture played a key role in shaping the new Gorton Square into a place that celebrates local identity while meeting modern community needs. Our creative and durable products contribute not only to aesthetics but to long-term usability, inclusivity, and civic pride in the space.
