Project Details

BSFG provided versatile seating solutions to complement the vision of Aire Park, an all-new green space in the centre of Leeds.

Designed to adapt across a variety of landscapes, the seating supports inclusive, accessible, and flexible use throughout this landmark public realm project.

Project Background

Aire Park is one of Leeds’s most ambitious regeneration projects, transforming the former Tetley Brewery site into a vibrant, accessible green space at the heart of the South Bank. Named after the nearby River Aire, this landmark development is part of a multi-phase masterplan that aims to double the size of the city centre population by 2030.

When complete, Aire Park will span more than three hectares, providing generous green space that blends habitats for wildlife with areas for leisure, play, and active travel. Acting as the centrepiece of Leeds’s vision for the South Bank, Aire Park strengthens connections between the city centre, Leeds Dock, and the forward-looking Climate Innovation District.

This vast, inclusive space will serve as both a recreational hub and a natural retreat, ensuring it benefits both current and future generations of Leeds residents.

The client sought a range of adaptable seating elements that could be deployed with versatility across the site—supporting inclusivity, comfort and ease of maintenance alongside many other interventions that contribute to the overall vision.

Our Solution

BSFG supplied a coordinated family of seating that meets the brief for adaptability while sitting quietly within the landscape character of Aire Park.

Bespoke Design: A sleek, minimal profile with two cylindrical sub-surface-mounted legs. This keeps edges clear, reduces debris build-up and simplifies cleaning and maintenance.

Inclusive Features: Armrests are strategically placed, with a central armrest option to aid transfers and improve accessibility for wheelchair users and older visitors.

Material & Finish: Sapele timbers were chosen for their durability and natural beauty. The timber has weathered to a stable pewter-grey finish, providing a timeless look that complements the park’s natural surroundings.

Wall mounted versions: The seating was designed to be versatile and used in multiple formats throughout the vast project. Wall-mounted versions appear on concrete podiums, while gabion wall benches showcase its flexibility in more rugged applications.

Feature Installations: Curved Hyde Benches are used to surround newly introduced trees, forming focal points on the lawns and at pathway convergences. As the trees mature, these seats will benefit from dappled shade and become natural gathering spots.

Outcome

The bespoke seating solutions play a vital role in shaping Aire Park as a welcoming, inclusive, and sustainable public realm. Designed for durability, accessibility, and adaptability, the seating enhances the visitor experience while supporting the long-term maintenance and usability of the space.

As Aire Park grows into its role as a central green hub for Leeds, the seating encourages community interaction, offers comfort in shaded retreats, and acts as a unifying design element across this landmark development
